It was started as a pilot plant to commercialize cultivation techniques developed by Professor Boussiba at Ben Gurion University, a leading microalgae research institute – a relationship the company maintains to this day. Ketura is located 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Eilat, in the southern Arava. Travel time by car is approximately 2 1/2 hours from Be'er Sheva, 3 1/2 hours from Jerusalem and 4 hours from Tel Aviv. Since members do not own their own cars, and the kibbutz itself has few cars, most traveling outside the region is done by rented car, plane or bus.

About one third of the members are native Israelis, with the rest coming from the United States, Canada, England, South Africa, Australia, Spain, France, Latin America, Switzerland, the Ketura is also home to a large facility of Algatech, the world’s leading supplier of astaxanthin, a red micro-algae said to benefit human health and fight diseases like cancer and immune disorders. The facility has been commercially producing the algae since 2003, and Kibbutz Ketura’s sunny, desert location ensures year-round production. Kibbutz Ketura Country Lodge is just 30 minutes from Eilat and is close to sights and attractions.
